Duchess

Duchess is a 5yr old spayed & pexyd Great Dane. She has recently been diagnosed with osteosarcoma & this coming Tuesday (feb 19) she will be losing her front left leg.

She is an amazingly sweet, gentle soul & I am so scared for her. I was the first one on board for amputation because I know I’m saving her life for the time being, but it’s scary not to know what it’s going to be like for her.

  1. Welcome and thank you for Duchess’ story. Your future blog posts and pages will publish immediately without requiring moderation.

You will find much more help and feedback in the discussion forums or by searching the member blogs. Start here for help finding the many Tripawds Resources an assistance programs.

  2. We’ll be right by your side to support you and Duchess during recovery, okay?

You are absolutely doing ecerything you can to give Duchess a pain free quality ife. We all understand that, regardless. it’s still a very stressful time and full of uncertainty. We’ve all been scared…….and we’ve all been sooo relieved when surgery is done and when recovery is over! Recovery is no picnic for a couple of weeks, but her sparkle WILL come back, bigger and brighter than ever!!

As the Admin Guy mentioned, posting in the forums is a good place to ask specific questions and get immediate replies,

We also have a helpline 1 844 TRIPAWD ro help support you too.

Almost all dogs spend one night (sometimes more) in a 24/7 staffed clinic. They usually come home with Tramadol, Gabapentin, Rimadyl and an antibiotic.

Remeber, you are doing this FOR Duchess, and not TO her!!! It may not seem like it those first several days, but you WILL be so glad you did this FOR your Duchess.

We’ll all be cheering for your sweet Duchess on Tuesday, so update when you can!!!

TRY and get some rest…..and stock up on chocolate, it helps!!!

    Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

PS. Take a glance at Loving Life on Three Legs…has lots of good info.

    1. Thank you so much. I am very anxious, but more about her recovery than the surgery. I know she’s in amazing hands, she has a surgical oncologist performing her operation & will be admitted for 2 nights with round the clock care.
My fears are for my girl being so gentle natured that she will be afraid to walk or be depressed without the limb. I don’t want her to think we’ve done something to her without understanding.

  3. Sending positive thoughts to you and Duchess. We are 3 weeks out from surgery and I won’t lie it is scary for sure. You will have many emotions and doubts. However, she will do great and you will be so amazed and proud of her when you see how she handles it. This group got me through the toughest hours with advice and encouragement and they will do the same for you.

Remember each dog is different and they all don’t walk out like you hear the stories of. My dog is older and sounds much like your in personality. He was confused and timid so it took a little longer. But now he is running in the yard, going up steps and walking a little further each day. Duchess will do great too!

Don’t forget to get a bunch of throw rugs to help her if you have slippery floors! Good luck.
