Late night question

Does anyone have any tips or help they can give me with last day pain meds. Duchess took her last gabapentin this morning (sheā€™s been off a tramadol since Tuesday) she is 10days post op.

Shes been fine all day, all evening. But she got up from sleeping and switched positions and is now breathing short heavy breaths. Like short heavy exhales. She makes that sound for super short periods of time when sheā€™s mid dream but she also twitches and runs. Sheā€™s not doing that right now sheā€™s just breathing weird

Iā€™m concerned. Is she painful? Sheā€™s sleeping so thatā€™s good, but is this a withdrawal kind of deal that will pass, or is she in real like need attention pain?

please settle my mind or give me some info on what I can do. I just donā€™t think itā€™s healthy for her to breathe and entire night so short and quick. Itā€™s consistent which is good she doesnā€™t pause, but like she doesnā€™t seem relaxed in her sleep at alllll

  1. Sounds in my opinion that she might still be in pain ( rather than drug withdrawal). Kaiserin was on tramadol for about 10 days, gabapentin for moe than 2 weeks and metacam for 3 weeks. I also tapered the gabapenin dose for about a week or more – still gave her 2 doses each day, but lower dose. Maybe talk to the vet about extending the gabapentin a bit or lowering the dose and tapering. See what they think!

  2. Ditto everything Kaiser’s mom said.

Sounds like it’s a bit early for Suchess to be off pain meds. Mh Happy Hannah was on pain meds I to the third week. I was able to give it at a reduced dose, by then, but she still needed it,

So do check with your Vet and tell him you need some more. Of course, we aren’t Vets and not giving Vet advice.

Let us know how it goes once you get the meds back in her system.

    Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

  3. Gabapentin is a medication that shouldnā€™t be stopped suddenly so she may need a longer tapering period or to stay on a full dose longer. Definitely call your vet for some guidance so she can get some relief. Some dogs just need to be on meds longer and thereā€™s nothing wrong with that at all so try not to worry.

PS For faster feedback you can always post in the Forums too ok?

    1. Half way through the night she seemed to relax and hasnā€™t had any issues since
Iā€™m wondering if maybe when she stood up she touched or scratched something and was just sore
Or maybe the ā€œphantomā€ limb issue cuz I noticed the area was twitching at the time.

We have 1 gaba left so I will break in half and try that way but call vets Monday to ask for a refill
