  1. Awww, love Duchess’s beautiful eyes. You can see what a gentle Soul she is.❤

Glad your Vet is keeping her two nights (or more of needed). It does sometimes take larger breed seceral days to get mobile, so no worries, okay? And, on top of that, front leggers sometimes need extra time to get their”sea legs”.

What Duchess is going to know, not that she’s missing a leg, but that she’s missing PAIN!!! And that leg looks painful!!!

It really is as though dogs have a spare leg. I know thst sounds crazy, it sure did to me, but you WILL see that it’s true.

As you check around the site, you’ll see we have several Great Dane members who handled life on three just fine!

Check out member Eurydice. She was a front legger st ocer 170 lbs and had a great life on three! She romped with other dogs, she galloped like a horse out in nature, she just had a ball!

Quick Great Dane story. Dane Atlas was told by two Vets she was NOT a candidate for amputation due to size and the fact she had Wobblers. His owner went for a third opinion who DID believe Atlas could handle three. Atlas had a glorious extended bonus time of over two years and rocked life on three weeks like a Champ!!

No, Duchess won’t be “depressed”. She may be drugged and somewhat lethargic at first, but not depressed. And as she does start feeling better, she may be a bit grumpy because uoj won’t let her jump up on the sofa or climb stairs, but nope…not depressed.

She may not want to eat much the first couple of days, and she may not poop for a several days (due to pain meds, etc). No worries. Drinking and peeing are important though.
Just keep lots of yummy foods on hand to help with the pill taking.

Now, very important! This is exhausting mentally and physically for YOU (far more on than for Duchess)! When Duchess is having her couple of night sleep over at the Vet, make sure YOU get some rest!! She’ll be in great hands and nice and high on good drugs😎

Hugs…and a vig smooch to Duchess for us!

Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    1. Its funny because from the beginning I was the first one on board with amputation. And even now I want it done, I just worry about her because she’s such a softy. She’s always mobile wagging her whole butt around, so I’m scared she won’t be mobile as much as I think based on all the amazing other dogs who get back on their feet so quickly.

I really appreciate your comments and messages of support, it’s the reason I created this blog.

  2. I remember these days, I couldn’t wait for the amputation day, not just to get it behind us, but to get Fallon started on her new life on 3. I spent all kinds of time making her favorite treats, getting the house prepared, reading the Tripawds site and other resources, and just loving on my girl.

Sally is 100% correct about taking care of yourself too–It’s like when you’re on the airplane and they’re making the safety speech right before takeoff–they advise you to put your oxygen mask on before those you are caring for so you can be fit and ready to help. I found that my stress what probably the biggest hurdle in Fallon’s process–she handled everything with such matter-of-fact grace, and I am sure Duchess will also.

Sending positive energy–we’ll be looking for updates!
